I am looking to start mobile beauty therapy, ive got the qualifications, how would i go about doing it?
What insurance do i need? should i start by doing only a few treatments, how should i advertise?
Hi. Firstly, congratulations.
To start up, the first thing you need to think about is what legal structure you want to take - most people in your case start out as sole traders but you could have a company or a partnership too.
To register as self employed, go to http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/iwtregister-as-self-employed.htm. You pay £2.30 per week national insurance and then will pay tax and more national insurance depending on your profit level. As far as the tax man is concerned, that is all you need.
However you will need to think about insurance:
* professional indemnity insurance (to protect you if someone sues you for making a mistake)
* public liability insurance (to protect you if someone hurts themselves on your equipment or on any premises you end up owning)
if you have employees, employers liability insurance.
* and make sure your motor insurance covers you for business use.
You may need to check whether you have to get any licenses from your local council for particular treatments such as:
acupuncture
ear-piercing
electrolysis
facials
manicure
pedicure
tattooing
waxing
If you are planning to making this your business, then I don't recommend starting off slowly - it very rarely works. Either you are going to make a go of it commercially or you are not. So plan to go for it!
There are a range of ways to generate business (advertising, networking, direct mail, etc), and you might do well to look at the Get Clients Now! website which has loads of great tools and information on it at http://www.mcssl.com/app/aftrack.asp?afid=693451. Maybe get a small van, and have it signwritten (or on your car), so everyone knows what you do and how to contact you.
Then make sure you keep track of all your business income and expenditure, the mileage you do travelling round as a mobile beauty therapist, etc., and get a good accountant to help you.
Finally, have fun!
